Over this past weekend, we had not one but two Grand Openings happening on the same day! Our Apex project in North Carolina and our Loveland project in Colorado. Today’s Event Tracker will be highlighting the Rodgers Family Skate Plaza in Apex, North Carolina this past Saturday. Check in tomorrow for The Mehaffey Skate Park Grand Opening out in Loveland, Colorado.
The Rodgers Family Skate Plaza in Apex, North Carolina is ironically the result of an encounter between a local skateboarder and a Apex police officer coming together to create the spark for this killer skate plaza.
About three years ago, Apex Police Captain Jacques Gilbert had a conversation with a local skater, “I told him he couldn’t skate in his own driveway. That frustrated me and it frustrated him. He asked me, ‘Where am I supposed to skate?’ I said I don’t know, but you have to figure it out. When I rode away that didn’t sit well with me. So I drove back to his house and I told him, we’re going to work on this project together” said Gilbert.
Since then many others joined the cause like John Rodgers, owner of Prime Mortgage Lending, he got involved when he was working with the Apex Chamber of Commerce. Saying, “They used to skateboard out there all the time. I thought it would be a great idea to have a place for them,” Rodgers said. “Then somebody else put their idea into motion and got this going for the town.”
The Rodgers Family donated a total of $100,000 of their own money to fund this Skate Plaza! It’s beyond motivating to us here at Team Pain to see such a generous donation from a private entity. Overall, the Grand Opening went great! Apex Board Shop put on a cash prize contest and there was well over a 1,000 people in attendance. We’d like to thank The Rodgers Family, The Town of Apex, Apex Board Shop and all the affiliates who made this project possible. We are beyond stoked on the communities efforts and more cities and towns need to follow in Apex’s foot steps.
Make sure to check back in tomorrow for our Event Tracker on our Loveland, Colorado project.
