The 2001 X-Game was held in the "City of Brotherly Love", Philadelphia, Pa. during the month of August. I'm not sure if the city was aware of what they were getting, but now they now what they are infore next year when it returns. The location was the First Union Center; homeof the Philadelphia Flyers & the 76'ers. The X-games took over the whole area around the First Union Center for almost four weeks. Most of the Front side of thparking lot was transformed into Moto-X Freestyle Dirt Jumping, Speed Climbing, Park Course for the BMX & Skateboarder & a huge area for sponsors exibits & vendors. On the days that the vert skateboarding, BMX (Dirt Jumping & Vert), Moto-x (Big Air & Step Up) was held theFirst Union Center was at full capacity (49,000) & at times there were as many as 5,000 people still in line to see the events. The outside held so many people I could not even begin to guess how many. At times the line to enter the event compound was an hour + wait & the event was free. Yes, that's right, free to get into.
Team Pain did it again, designed & built a vertical master piece. Uniquely retro in design, the skate ramp was 56' wide with two extensions on the same wall at different ends of the ramp The extensions have escalators down three feet. This design allowed a Mini ramp on the deck for skaters to utilize during their runs or just to dork around on during warm-ups & in between contest ride. This was somewhat controversial to some skaters because they think that the contest ramps should be a standardized design. The so called "standardized design " is kind of like the ramps that some always skate, one wall that is the same height & the opesite wall might have an extension or a roll in.
Other skaters enjoy new unique designs and have fun skating them, while other skaters don't really care one way or another, they just want to skate. Well, Tim enjoys building progressesively unique ramps such as this ramp for the X-Games. This is also great to see the skaters overcome these varibles & to witness the skating of those that adapt & conqure. Such Unique designs that come to mind is the Animal Chin Ramp, which had a min-ramp on the deck also. The Chin ramp was also the first spine ramp made. Anothe ramp that comes to mind is the ramp the was built @ the Bull Fighting Ring By the Sea in Mexico for Tony Hawks film, BirdHouse "The End". This ramp had big Transitions, & a Loop on the side of the ramp.
